Natural Dusting Powder

I was born and brought up in Mumbai. Hot and humid is one of the best descriptions of the city. Having grown up in a time of no internet, no social media and fewer choices, guess what was the go-to makeup item for ‘Mumbai chi mulgi’? You guessed right…….dusting powders! Or talcum powders as they were then called.

In case you are only looking for some recommendations and do not wish to read on, here are my top 3 natural dusting powders:

  1. Juicy Chemistry Damask Rose & Jasmine Organic Powder (Certified Organic, Handcrafted)
  2. Forest Essentials Dasapushpadi Baby Body Powder (Luxury brand with Ayurveda base)
  3. Mother Sparsh Talc-Free Natural Dusting Powder for Babies (Good budget buy)

  1. Corn starch
  2. Arrowroot starch
  3. Rice starch
  4. Tapioca starch
  5. Kaolin clay
  6. Oats flour

Buyers’ Guide:

What is talcum powder?

Talcum powder is made from a mineral called talc that is found in underground stone deposits all over the world. Its mined like all other minerals and is the softest mineral known to mankind!

Is talcum powder harmful?

There is no conclusive evidence found that proves that it’s harmful by itself. However, since talc is mined from underground, it is usually found in close proximity to another mineral which is a known carcinogen, asbestos.

So, if there is asbestos contamination in the talc, it could be potentially harmful to us.

A shift from talcum powders to dusting powders…..

Then came the Internet! And with it came a wealth of knowledge and information, readily available at our fingertips. We can now use this new-found knowledge to make informed choices that are clean and healthy.

It also helps that a wide variety of natural products are now available for us to choose from.

How to use dusting powders?

If you thought dusting powders were only meant for baby’s bottoms, think again! As I mentioned earlier, I am born a Mumbaikar and dusting powders were just a part of our everyday lives. Here are some hacks that are truly time-tested:

  1. Control sweating and smell fresh all day long: Just dab a generous amount of dusting powder on underarms and chest and you can rest assured that the BO (body odor) in the office lift isn’t you!
  2. Remove that sweaty/creamy shine from your face: If you live in a humid place you’ll know what I mean. During summers, your face goes from well made to well un-made within minutes, with streaks of sweat running down your forehead.

In my case, it’s a double whammy. I have extra dry skin. During winters I have to apply a heavy-duty moisturizer which makes my face shiny from the creaminess. So what do I do? A dab of dusting powder in both cases!
  3. Even out skin tone: On days when you have no time for BB creams or foundations, this comes to your rescue. A slight dab all over your face with your fingertips and Voila! It works like magic.
  4. Use as dry shampoo: If you’re running late and have no time to shampoo (my state of being on most days) or you’ve run out of your favorite dry shampoo just massage some dusting powder on to your scalp and you’ll be good to go.
  5. A must as a pre-wax application: Any beautician worth her salt (or dusting powder!) will not start waxing unless she has applied a generous amount of it on your body. Why? Because dusting powder not only absorbs excess moisture but also creates a thin film between your leg and the wax. This helps in a pain-free and quick waxing session
  6. Set your makeup: Once you are done applying makeup, just take a face brush, dip it in dusting powder and just swirl it over your face. It works beautifully on lipsticks too. Apply your first coat of lipstick, place a thin tissue on your lips and with a blush brush apply dusting powder on your lips through the tissue. Then apply a second coat and you have a well-set long-lasting lipstick!
  7. For fuller eyelashes: Apply one coat of mascara followed by some dusting powder,  which you can apply with an earbud, and follow it up with a second coat. The mascara doesn’t clump and you have longer, fuller lashes.
  8. Say good-bye to chafing: What is chafing? Its when your inner thighs rub together and lead to bruising. It usually happens during the summer due to excessive sweating and can be very irritating and extremely painful. The best way to avoid it is by generously applying dusting powder over likely-to-be-affected areas before you leave home.
  9. Slipping on clothes easily: How do you get into that two-sizes smaller, slim fit jeans you recently bought? By now you know…….dusting powder all over your legs!

A few more hacks that I came across during my research:

  1. Keep your wardrobe smelling fresh: This requires you to put some dusting powder in a bowl and place it in your wardrobe. But what if the bowl topples? That will definitely be a bit messy! So not sure if this would work.
I’d rather spray a nice floral body mist all over my clothes in the wardrobe to keep it smelling like a bouquet! (Thought bubble over my head right now: Would you like to know about natural/organic body mists available out there? Let me know in the comments below)
  2. Absorb sweat from and freshen up your shoes: Just sprinkle some dusting powder into your shoes to absorb all the extra moisture and keep it smelling fresh. Honestly, I haven’t tried this trick yet. If you do, let me know in the comments below if it works for you.
  3. Get rid of sand from your body: Something to remember the next time you are vacationing by the beach. Of course, you’ll need to first remember to pack that bottle of you-know-what!

I think dusting powder is truly an underrated beauty product of our times!
